Direct answerAEO and GEO are specialist workflows inside a broader SEO system. SEO establishes discovery and eligibility, AEO improves direct answer coverage, and GEO strengthens the entities, evidence and external sources generative systems may retrieve. None of them can guarantee ranking, citation or recommendation.

What Google actually says about AEO and GEO

Google’s 2026 guidance defines AEO as Answer Engine Optimisation and GEO as Generative Engine Optimisation, then places both within the wider work of improving the search experience. Search Engine Journal’s analysis highlights the same point: for Google Search, AEO and GEO are not replacements for SEO.

The Google Search Central guide explains that generative Search features still depend on the Search index and core ranking and quality systems. Pages must remain crawlable, indexable and eligible for snippets. Useful content, clear technical structure, internal discovery and a good page experience remain the foundation.

This matters commercially. A buyer should be cautious when an agency sells AEO or GEO as a secret technical layer, special schema package or guaranteed citation service. The stronger position is to show which additional operating jobs are being performed and how they connect to normal SEO.

One system, three different jobs

DisciplinePrimary jobTypical inputsUseful outputsExample measurement
SEOMake valuable pages discoverable, eligible and competitiveCrawl data, keywords, templates, links, page experienceIntent architecture, technical backlog, content and authority planIndexed coverage, qualified rankings, organic journeys
AEOMake important decisions directly and completely answerableQuestions, support data, policies, comparison needsAnswer blocks, decision guides, factual consistency and FAQ systemsAnswer coverage, surfaced pages, accuracy, assisted visits
GEOMake the brand and its evidence easier to verify and citeEntities, claims, sources, mentions, expert evidenceEntity register, source-gap plan, original assets and citation monitoringCitation rate, source mix, factual accuracy, recommendation status

The distinction prevents duplication. AEO should not create a second version of every SEO page. GEO should not manufacture mentions or rewrite the site only for machines. Each discipline strengthens the same public, human-readable information system.

How query fan-out changes content planning

Google describes query fan-out as the generation of several related searches that help an AI system answer a complex request. Instead of retrieving one page for one exact phrase, the system may explore several connected information needs.

Search Engine Journal’s explanation of AI Mode rankings frames these as latent or hidden questions. Its practical implication is useful: optimise for the complete information need rather than repeating the head keyword across many near-identical pages.

For an iGaming brand, a question such as “Is this operator safe to use?” may lead to related information needs:

  1. Which domain is official?
  2. What company operates the service?
  3. Which markets and products are available?
  4. How are identity verification and withdrawals handled?
  5. Where are responsible-play and support policies published?
  6. What do independent sources and customer reviews say?

The correct response is not six thin pages created for AI. It is a connected source-of-truth system in which the appropriate official pages answer those questions clearly and link users to the next decision.

The SEOVIP operating model

1. Establish retrieval eligibility

Search engines still need crawlable HTML, stable canonical URLs, useful internal links and content that satisfies a clear intent. Without these foundations, answer and AI optimisation has little reliable material to work with.

We map the parent user decision, the direct questions it contains and the supporting questions likely to appear across a query fan-out journey. Every question receives an existing or planned URL owner.

3. Make answers complete and extractable

AEO improves whether the page contains a direct, complete and specific answer. Definitions, comparison tables, process lists and short summaries are used when they improve human comprehension—not because Google requires content to be broken into artificial chunks.

4. Strengthen entity and evidence quality

GEO aligns official brand facts, expert review, original evidence and legitimate third-party presence. The goal is to reduce ambiguity and give retrieval systems better sources, not to force a particular generated answer.

5. Monitor citations and recommendations separately

A citation means a source contributed to an answer. A mention means the brand appeared. A recommendation means the brand was included in a suggested shortlist. These are different outcomes and should not be collapsed into one “AI visibility” score.

What SEOVIP will not sell as an AEO/GEO advantage

  • Special AI schema. Google says no special structured data is required for its generative features. Standard schema should describe the visible page accurately.
  • A ranking benefit from llms.txt. Google says AI text files are not required for visibility in Google generative Search. Such files may still have operational uses for other agents, but they are not presented as a Google ranking lever.
  • Hundreds of fan-out pages. Mass-producing query variants risks duplication and scaled-content abuse.
  • Inauthentic mentions. Fabricated discussions, reviews or citations damage the trust system GEO is supposed to strengthen.
  • Guaranteed citations. Generated answers vary by platform, query, model, location and time.

A practical measurement framework

LayerWhat to recordWhat it does not prove
RetrievalIndexed owner, ranking coverage, cited URL and source domainThat the answer is accurate or positive
AnswerQuestion coverage, completeness and factual consistencyThat the user clicked or converted
CitationCitation rate and source mix across repeatable promptsThat the brand was recommended
RecommendationShortlist presence, context and sentimentThat the recommendation caused a conversion
BusinessQualified visits, registrations and downstream events where approvedThat one AI surface deserves full attribution

Google currently includes AI Overview and AI Mode activity within normal Search Console web reporting rather than providing a separate AI performance report. Cross-platform prompt monitoring should therefore be treated as a directional visibility dataset, not a substitute for Search Console and conversion analytics.

Questions procurement teams should ask

How does the AEO/GEO work connect to technical SEO?

The agency should be able to show how crawlability, indexation, canonicals, internal links and page quality support every answer or citation initiative. If the work exists only in a prompt dashboard, it is incomplete.

Which claims are based on official guidance?

The proposal should separate Google’s documented requirements from third-party observations about ChatGPT, Perplexity or other platforms. Platform behaviour can differ, and an inference should be labelled as an inference.

What evidence will the client own?

Useful deliverables include the question map, entity and claims register, source-gap analysis, content briefs, cited-source history and repeatable monitoring methodology. Screenshots alone are difficult to audit or compare.
